MOA

A peel applies a cosmetic solution — acids and/or fruit enzymes — to the skin to loosen and remove the surface layer of dead skin cells, encouraging renewal of a smoother, more even layer. Some agents also help stimulate collagen. Peels are grouped by depth (superficial/light, medium and deep), and the type and strength are matched to your individual skin concern at assessment. Common agents include alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, tartaric, malic, citric and salicylic acid), fruit enzymes (from papaya, pineapple, pumpkin and cranberry), TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and vitamin A.

Medical Enzyme Peels Treatment Summary

Some peels are performed as a one-off, while others are done at intervals over a course, depending on your skin concern. The right approach is determined at your assessment.

A session usually takes about 15 minutes.

Sensation ranges from none to mild or moderate depending on the type and strength of peel and varies between patients; you may feel light tingling, warmth or stinging.

Downtime depends on the depth of peel — lighter peels often involve little to none, while medium-depth peels can involve redness and flaking for around 3 to 5 days. Individual experiences vary.

The skin’s surface renews to look smoother and more even, developing over the days following treatment; results vary between individuals.

Results typically last several months when supported by a home skincare routine and vary between individuals; the effect is not permanent, so repeat or maintenance treatments may be needed.

Most usual activities can be resumed immediately; it is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise, direct sunlight and chlorinated pools for about 3 days.

It is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise, direct sunlight and chlorinated pools for about 3 days and to support results with a home skincare routine; guidance is tailored to you at your appointment.

Medical Enzyme Peels General Information

The risk of serious complications is low. Possible effects include an allergic reaction (very rare), prolonged swelling for a few days (rare) and cold sores (rare).

Peels range from light enzyme formulas to deeper acid solutions, and recovery and risk scale with depth — so a provider who chooses the right peel matters most. Points worth raising:

  • Whether your skin is assessed so the type, strength and depth of peel are matched to your concern, rather than one formula used on everyone
  • Whether the practitioner explains that a light peel may involve little downtime while a medium-depth peel can mean several days of redness and flaking
  • Whether your history is taken — cold sores, previous reactions, recent sun exposure or active skincare — since these affect suitability
  • Whether the practitioner is registered and sets out the limitations and alternatives before you commit to a single treatment or a course

Because a peel’s strength and depth directly affect both the result and the recovery, the judgement behind that choice is where medical oversight counts. At MedAesthetics, peels are performed in a doctor-led clinic overseen by Dr Ehsan Jadoon (MED0001586460), Registered Medical Practitioner (general registration), by a qualified clinical team. Every peel starts with a clinical evaluation of your skin so the agent and depth are matched to your concern, and factors such as cold-sore history or sensitivity are taken into account. The benefits, likely recovery, risks and alternatives are discussed openly, with no pressure to proceed. Book a consultation to find out which peel, if any, suits your skin.
