Fraxel CO₂ laser resurfacing is one of our most commonly requested treatments and has been an important part of our skin rejuvenation practice for many years. It uses controlled laser energy to resurface the skin and stimulate the body’s natural healing and remodelling processes.

MOA

Fractional CO₂ laser delivers precise laser energy into microscopic columns within the skin, creating controlled areas of thermal injury while leaving surrounding tissue intact.

This controlled treatment stimulates the skin’s natural healing response and promotes collagen remodelling and new skin formation. Over time, this can improve the appearance of skin texture, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores and certain types of scarring.

The depth and intensity of treatment can be adjusted according to the skin concern, treatment area and individual skin characteristics.

Fraxel CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment Summary

The number of sessions varies with your skin and goals, and is confirmed at your consultation.

Procedure time is about 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the area treated.

Sensation varies between patients, though most feel minimal discomfort once the area is numbed. A strong topical anaesthetic cream is used and further comfort measures can be added, with pain management discussed at your consultation.

Recovery depends on the intensity used — commonly around 7 to 10 days. Lighter to medium (rejuvenation) settings typically involve about five to seven days, while more intensive settings for scars and stretch marks typically involve about seven to fourteen days.

Results are noticeable once the skin has fully healed and fresh collagen production has taken place. This can take upto 6 weeks.

Scars and Stretch Marks
Improvements in the appearance of scars and stretch marks may be long-lasting, although results vary depending on the type, severity and characteristics of the treated area. Some scars and stretch marks may require multiple sessions to achieve the desired improvement.

Facial Rejuvenation and Ageing Concerns
Results may last up to three years, depending on individual skin characteristics, the treatment performed and the natural ageing process.

To help maintain improvements over time, we may recommend a lighter maintenance treatment every 12–18 months, where clinically appropriate. The timing and suitability of maintenance treatments are determined through individual assessment.

Most light activities can be resumed straight away; avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Preparing for Treatment

Skin preparation before Fractional CO₂ laser treatment is important to help optimise your skin’s condition and reduce the risk of complications.

Depending on your skin type and individual needs, preparation may begin at least two weeks before treatment, or around four weeks for darker skin types. This may include avoiding direct UV exposure, using daily sun protection and following a prescribed skincare routine that may include exfoliation and topical vitamins A, B and C.

Additional preparation may be recommended if you are prone to pigmentation changes or cold sores.

The area is numbed with a high-strength topical anaesthetic cream. Once the skin is numb, the practitioner performs the treatment using settings based on your skin type, your concern and your downtime.

Treatment discomfort varies depending on the area treated and the intensity of the laser. At Medaesthetics, we use a combination of comfort measures, which include extra-strength topical numbing cream, skin cooling and nitrous oxide (laughing gas), where appropriate, to help minimise discomfort during treatment.

Most patients tolerate it well, though some discomfort can occur for the first few hours after more intensive settings.

Fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing may be considered for selected skin concerns where controlled ablative treatment and skin remodelling may provide clinical benefit.

Skin preparation for at least two weeks beforehand (four weeks for darker skin) is important, and typically involves sun avoidance, sun protection, daily exfoliation and topical vitamin A, B and C, with additional measures for people prone to pigmentation or cold sores. You are provided with a skin-preparation kit and instructions before booking.

Recovery depends on the intensity used — about five to seven days of downtime for lighter rejuvenation settings, and about seven to fourteen days for more intensive scar and stretch-mark settings. Downtime and results vary between individuals.

Fraxel CO₂ laser is an ablative resurfacing procedure that creates controlled microscopic areas of skin injury to stimulate the skin’s repair process. As with any ablative laser treatment, side effects and complications can occur. The likelihood and severity depend on treatment depth, skin type, treatment area and individual healing response.

Expected temporary effects may include:

  • Redness, swelling and skin sensitivity.
  • A sensation of heat, tightness or discomfort.
  • Temporary skin darkening, crusting, flaking or peeling.
  • Temporary changes in skin texture during healing.

Potential complications may include:

  • Prolonged redness or delayed healing.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or, less commonly, loss of pigmentation.
  • Infection, including bacterial infection or reactivation of cold sores.
  • Scarring or persistent changes in skin texture.
  • Persistent redness or sensitivity.
  • Unsatisfactory or uneven results.

People with darker skin tones, a history of abnormal scarring, active skin infections or certain medical conditions may have additional risks and require careful assessment before treatment.

Following treatment, appropriate wound care and strict sun protection are important. Increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, discharge or other unexpected symptoms should be assessed promptly by a medical practitioner.
