Laser tattoo and Permanent makeup removal is a specialised procedure that uses targeted laser energy to break tattoo pigment into smaller particles, which are gradually cleared by the body’s natural processes. MOA

Laser tattoo removal works through a process known as selective photothermolysis and photoacoustic disruption, in which carefully selected laser wavelengths deliver energy to tattoo pigments within the skin.

  • Targeting tattoo pigment: The laser emits short pulses of light at a wavelength selected to target particular ink colours. The pigment absorbs this energy, while appropriate settings help limit exposure of surrounding tissue.
  • Breaking down ink particles: Depending on the laser technology, the energy produces rapid heating and/or photoacoustic effects that fragment tattoo pigment into smaller particles.
  • Natural pigment clearance: Following treatment, the body’s immune system gradually processes and clears some of the fragmented pigment over time. This is why tattoo fading continues for weeks to months after each session.

Beauty salons and non-medical laser providers do not have access to the same medical assessment, anaesthetic options or clinical support.

Not all colours respond equally. Black and red inks generally fade more effectively; green, blue and yellow are often more challenging. Different colours also sit at different depths — black sits deepest, blue/green in the mid-dermis, and red/orange closer to the surface — so different wavelengths are needed to target each colour and depth (1064nm for dark pigment, 694nm for blue/green, 532nm for red).

Several non-laser methods have been used to remove or reduce the appearance of tattoos. These include surgical excision, dermabrasion, chemical removal techniques and tattoo removal creams. However, their effectiveness and cosmetic outcomes vary, and many methods carry a significant risk of skin damage or scarring. 

Common non-laser methods and their limitations

  • Tattoo removal creams: These products generally cannot reach the tattoo pigment deposited in the deeper layers of the skin. There is no reliable evidence that over-the-counter tattoo removal creams can effectively remove permanent tattoos. Some may cause irritation, chemical burns or scarring.
