In skin rejuvenation, Forever Young BBL is a treatment that is often discussed — but what exactly is it, and how does it work?
Forever Young BBL is a specific BroadBand Light (BBL) protocol offered at MedAesthetics as part of our skin rejuvenation treatments. BBL is a form of light-based (energy) therapy, and the Forever Young protocol is designed to address the visible signs of skin ageing not only at the surface but in the deeper layers of the skin. Unlike some laser or IPL treatments that mainly target surface concerns, Forever Young BBL is intended to influence processes deeper in the skin, including how skin cells behave.
The protocol was originally developed by Sciton™, and its effects have been studied in research associated with Stanford University. It uses targeted light energy with the aim of stimulating collagen and elastin production, addressing the appearance of uneven skin tone, and supporting a smoother skin texture. As with any energy-based treatment, results develop gradually, vary from person to person, and are not guaranteed.
In this article, we explain how Forever Young BBL works, how it differs from other skin treatments, what concerns it is used for, and what to consider — including the risks and recovery — before deciding whether it is right for you.
How Does Forever Young BBL Work?
At its core, Forever Young BBL is a form of BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy — a non-invasive treatment that uses pulses of light to reach into the skin and prompt a regenerative response.
What distinguishes the Forever Young protocol is that it is designed to reach into the deeper (dermal) layers of the skin. It uses a specific protocol and handpiece to deliver calibrated light energy that targets pigmentation and redness at the surface, while also aiming to prompt processes in the deeper layers.
One area of interest with Forever Young BBL is its possible effect on gene expression. Research from Stanford University reported evidence that BBL treatment may influence the expression of genes associated with skin ageing — appearing to increase the activity of some genes and reduce the activity of others linked to ageing. This is an area of ongoing research, and findings from studies do not guarantee a particular result for any individual.
In practical terms, Forever Young BBL is intended to support the skin’s own processes so that, over a series of treatments, some people see gradual improvement in skin tone and texture. Because the treatment works with the body’s natural response, changes tend to develop over time — particularly when treatment is repeated as part of a maintenance plan — but the degree of change varies between individuals.
What Makes Forever Young BBL Different From Other Skin Treatments?
With many options available for skin rejuvenation — from lasers to peels to injectable treatments — you may wonder what distinguishes Forever Young BBL.
The main difference is that it is designed to work below the surface, addressing some of the factors involved in how skin ages, rather than only the surface appearance.
May Influence Genes Associated with Skin Ageing
Unlike treatments that only address the visible signs of ageing, regular Forever Young BBL treatments have been studied for a possible effect on gene expression in the skin. Some research suggests treatment may be associated with changes in the activity of genes linked to skin ageing. It is one of relatively few aesthetic treatments to have been studied at this level — though this remains an area of ongoing research and does not translate into a guaranteed outcome for any individual.
Stimulates Natural Collagen and Elastin Production
By delivering calibrated pulses of light into the dermis, Forever Young BBL is intended to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen and elastin — two proteins involved in skin firmness and elasticity. As new collagen forms over time, some people notice improvement in skin texture and tone. How much difference any individual sees varies.
Designed for Long-Term Skin Maintenance
Rather than a one-off treatment, Forever Young BBL is generally used within an ongoing maintenance plan. Some research suggests that regular maintenance treatment may help the skin’s appearance be maintained over time. The evidence is still developing, and individual results vary, so it is best considered as one part of a longer-term skin care and sun-protection routine rather than a way to stop the ageing process.
What Skin Concerns Does Forever Young BBL Address?
Forever Young BBL is used mainly to address the early visible signs of skin ageing, but its uses go beyond fine lines.
Because it is designed to work at a deeper level, it may help address the appearance of a range of common concerns, including:
- fine lines and texture changes associated with skin ageing;
- loss of firmness and elasticity;
- redness and pigmentation associated with sun damage, which can cause blotchiness or uneven tone;
- dull-looking skin, by supporting collagen production and skin vitality.
By addressing both surface concerns and deeper skin health, Forever Young BBL is used to help improve the appearance of skin tone and texture. It is often used as part of an ongoing skin maintenance plan. It is not a substitute for medical assessment of any skin spot or lesion that is new, changing or of concern — those should always be checked by a qualified practitioner.
What to Consider: Suitability, Risks and Recovery
Forever Young BBL is not suitable for everyone, and no energy-based treatment is risk-free. Suitability depends on your skin type, your skin history and your goals, and is assessed at an individual consultation.
Possible risks and side effects include redness, swelling and warmth in the treated area; temporary darkening and then flaking of treated pigmented spots; and, less commonly, blistering, crusting, burns, temporary or longer-lasting changes in skin pigmentation, or (rarely) scarring or infection. The risk of pigment changes is higher for people with darker skin tones, who need particularly careful assessment and adjusted settings. Recent tanning, some medical conditions, certain medications (including photosensitising medications) and pregnancy may mean the treatment is not appropriate — these are checked at consultation.
Recovery is usually short but differs between individuals. Some redness and warmth is common immediately after treatment and often settles within a few hours to a day or two, and treated pigmented spots commonly darken temporarily before flaking off over several days. Sun protection before and after treatment is important, and heat exposure and strenuous exercise are usually avoided for a short period. Your practitioner will give you aftercare advice specific to your treatment.
