All You Need to Know About Facial Peels

Skin peels have been used in cosmetic skincare for many years, ranging from stronger chemical peels that involve some weeks of downtime through to more superficial peels with less downtime. The active ingredients used in peels have been widely researched, and there are many options that may suit different skin types and concerns. Which peel is appropriate — if any — depends on your concern, your desired outcome, how much downtime you can accommodate and your skin type, and this is determined during an individual skin assessment.

Why do people opt for facial peels?

A peel works by resurfacing or exfoliating the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). This helps break down dead skin cells and clear excess sebum and congestion. Depending on the peel and the individual, peels may help with the appearance of superficial pigmentation and sun damage, and can support skin hydration. Some people find a peel helps with the appearance of an uneven or congested complexion and of fine lines.

Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed. More than one treatment is often needed, and the outcome depends on your skin, your concern and the peel used.

Ingredients of a facial peel

Peels are versatile: they vary in the strength of the active ingredient used, the number of layers applied, and how long the peel is left on the skin.

At MedAesthetics we use a range of peels containing alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAs/BHAs), which are used for their exfoliating, hydrating and clarifying properties. More traditional ingredients include lactic, glycolic, mandelic and salicylic acids, which come in varying strengths and can be used on their own or in combination with other ingredients. We also offer Jessner’s and TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels, which are higher-grade and typically involve more downtime.

Professional Peels vs At-Home Peels

A number of at-home peel products are now available. These can be useful, but they contain lower concentrations of active ingredients. That is because over-the-counter products are regulated to concentrations considered suitable for general use across most skin types.

A professional peel allows more customisation of ingredients and strength to suit your individual skin. Because the concentrations are higher, the potential side effects can also be greater — which is why a professional peel is carried out after an individual assessment and with clear aftercare guidance. Your clinician will explain the benefits, limitations and risks so you can make an informed decision.

Risks, downtime and aftercare

A peel is a cosmetic procedure and carries risks. Depending on the peel and your skin, possible effects include redness, stinging, tightness, flaking or peeling, and temporary sensitivity. Less commonly, effects can include blistering, changes in pigmentation (particularly in darker skin), prolonged redness, infection or scarring.

Downtime varies between individuals and between peels. Superficial peels may involve little visible peeling, while higher-grade peels such as Jessner’s or TCA can involve several days of visible flaking. Aftercare typically includes avoiding sun exposure, using a daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen, keeping the skin hydrated, and not picking or exfoliating while the skin recovers. Your clinician will give you aftercare instructions specific to your peel. Individual results and recovery vary from person to person.
